My latest research project involved “finding the parents of Selah Murray Stevens”...
Blog Post (Gray-Piper): Selah Murray Stevens b. 1799, Connecticut

Ancestors and descendants of Selah Murray Stevens and Eliza Helm Author: Parsons, N. Vincent (Nahum). One ancestor, Martin Bere/Beer, who died about 1472 at Rochester, Eng., married Alice Nissell of Wrotham, Kent, Eng. Descendants Immigrated to Fairfield, Conn. before 1628. -Surnames: Stevens, Helm, Bere, Bull, DeLong, Hendry, Marvin, Woodhull. Note (Jody Gray): Nahum Parsons (1904-1977) was the great-grandson of Selah Murray Stevens; and, an experienced genealogist.

I came across almost all of the family surnames mentioned by N. Vincent Parsons: Stevens, Helm, Bere, Bull, DeLong, Hendry, Marvin, Woodhull... and, "along-the-way", some he hadn't mentioned, like the Neale Family and the Cromwell Family...
Selah Murray Stevens married Eliza Helm; her father, Woodhull Helm’s family connects with the Woodhull Family of the Plymouth Colonies, immigrated from Northamptonshire, England; in England the surname was de Wahull; Walter aka Seier de Flanders [of Flanders], de Seton  [of Seton] came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066; he was rewarded with vast amounts of land, became a Baron and assumed the name, Walter de Wahull. His father was Lambert II Count of Lens… descended from Counts of Boulogne ca 900 AD… descended from Margraves of Flanders ca. 837 AD… descended from Anacher, Great Forester of Flanders… along the way there are marriages to Judith Princess of West Francia (who was married to the son of Ethelwulf King of England… Elfthryth, granddaughter of Egbert King of Wessex… and, through the Count of Flanders “twigs”, Matilda of Flanders who married William I. the first Norman King of England… and so it goes, in England… linking up with the likes of Catherine Parr who married Henry VIII, King of England
Back to my latest project “Selah Murray Stevens”... In England, the Stevens surname began as Fitz-Stephens: Airard was commander of the Mora, the ship that carried William the Conqueror to the Battle of Hastings; the family settles in Gloucestershire, England… there’s a long lineage of Knights and Barons (in Winterbourne); in 1314, “Fitz” is dropped, the surname becomes Stephens… In 1564, we find Edward Stephens purchased the Chavenage Estate; in 1575, with his brother Richard and a group of trustees, the Mill on Eastington Estate is purchased [brother, Richard purchased the Eastington Estate in 1569, and Alkerton Estate in 1570]; when his brother, Richard, dies without an heir Edward inherits his estates [Eastington and Alkerton]... Edward’s son, Thomas purchases the vast estate of Lypiatt in 1610… beginning with his 2nd son, John b. 1585, the Lypiatt estate is passed on to male heirs…

John Stephens/Stevens [b. 1603] is the 1st of his family to immigrate to America in 1639 (he's not the 1st of the Stephens family); his wife Mary [Ann] Moulson died in 1639; John took two of his sons with him; Thomas and William… they settled in Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut. John’s son, Thomas removed to Killingsworth, Middlesex, CT where he helped establish the new community…
Note (Jody Gray): (10/3/16) I made the following changes after I received Family Records that identify the parents of Selah Murray Stevens. (Thomas b. 1630) his descendants: James b. 1650, James b. 1676, Amos b. 1711, Aaron b. 1762, Aaron b. 1735 married Phebe Post b. 1766 are the parents of Selah Murray Stevens b. 1799 who married Eliza Helm b. 1802 connecting the Stevens and Helm Families… Eliza’s father, Woodhull Helm married (4th) Thaly Ann Stevens she is a descendant of the Stephens/Stevens family: Thomas b. 1630, John b. 1660, Peter b. 1685, Gershom b. 1741 who married Phebe Henry are the parents of Thaly Ann b. 1779 who married Woodhull Helm b. 1777 becoming the “stepmother” of Eliza b. 1802.
