Background: Before he died in 1971, my grandfather, Robert Lyn Gray, was working on the Gray, Lynch, Paddock family tree. It appears that these letters were the result of Robert writing to his Aunt Rosabel Lynch-Hicks requesting information. Aunt Rosabel’s letter is dated 12/27/1958; cousin Louisa’s letter is dated 9/7/1966. I attached a copy of the letters to the appropriate people in my Ancestry.com Gray-Piper Family Tree: Robert Lyn Gray, Rosabel Lynch, Louisa Crail. Media: Letter from Rosabel Lynch (m: Hicks). Media: Letter from Louisa M. Crail (m: Miller).
Daughters (sisters) of 2-1 Timothy and Louisa (Paddock) Lynch
3-6 Clare Maud m: George A Gray; stayed in Claremont, MN *parents of 4-1 Robert Lyn Gray
3-5 Rosabel Lynch m: Walter S Hicks they moved to Great Falls, Cascade, MT
her son, 4-1 Wayne D Hicks m: Laura A; they lived in Helena MT
3-4 Lillie Mamie (died 1914, age 40) m: William H Crail they moved to Dresden, ND
her daughter, 4-3 Louisa M. Crail m: Harold V Miller moved to Great Falls, Cascade, MT
3-2 Nellie (Laura) Lynch m: William H Chase; they lived in Malta, Phillips, MT
her daughter, 4-2 Caroline Chase (1893) m: Verne Ludwick; Malta, Phillips, MT
her granddaughter, 6-2 Karen Granat married in Malta, Phillips, MT
4-3 Louisa Crail is Rosabel’s niece. Louisa (Paddock) Lynch is Louisa Crail’s grandmother.
4-3 Louisa Crail (1900) and 4-2 Caroline Chase (1893) are cousins.
In order to organize these “Paddock” family members I’m using Thomas J and Laura (Odell) Paddock as the beginning of the Dodge County, Minnesota Paddock family branch. They are the parents of Louisa Marie Paddock who married Timothy Lynch; they are the parents of Clare Maud Lynch who married George Alvey Gray; they are the parents of Robert Lyn Gray my grandfather who received the letters from Rosabel Lynch-Hicks and Louisa M Crail-Miller (daughter of Lillie Mamie Lynch-Crail).
Paddock Generation 1: Thomas J and Laura (Odell) Paddock both born in Vermont in 1809. I don’t have a marriage record. Their first son, Lauren Austin Paddock, was born in Newbury, Ohio in 1837; followed by Elbridge Gerry Paddock in 1839. The family of four are listed in the 1840 Census, Newbury, Ohio. Son, Myron Paddock, born in Ohio. Daughter, Helen Mar Paddock, born in Wisconsin in 1843; daughter, Louisa Marie Paddock, born in 1848. The 1850 Census, Black River, Wisconsin lists all complete family: Thomas 42 and Laura 43; (Lauren) Austin 13, (Elbridge) George 11, Myron 9, Hellen 7, Louisa 2. The 1865 Minnesota, Territorial and State Census shows Thos J Paddock in Ripley and Westfield Twp, Dodge Co, Minnesota. The 1870 Census lists Thomas J and Laura Paddock both born in Vermont abt 1809 (age 61). Laura died in 1873; Thomas died in 1874.
Children of Thomas and Laura Paddock
2-1 Lauren Austin Paddock 1837-1900
2-2 Elbridge Gerry “George” Paddock 1839-1920
2-3 Myron Paddock 1841
2-4 Helen Mar Paddock 1843-1921
2-5 Louisa Marie Paddock 1848-1911
Letter from Louisa M (Crail) Miller. 9/7/1966
I went to Malta a week ago for Caroline’s grand daughter’s wedding, and while I was there we spent a most interesting time going thur some old letters that 2-1 Uncle Austin (Grandmother 2-5 Louisa Paddock-Lynch’s brother) had written to Aunt Nell (Lynch-Chase) between 1893-1890.
(4-2 Lynch) Caroline is the daughter of (3-2 Lynch) Nellie Lynch and William H Chase. Caroline m: Verne Ludwick; their daughter (5-1 Lynch) Nellie Mae Ludwick m: Stephen Granat; their daughter 6-2 Karen Granat m: Ronald Glazier (8/28/1966) in Malta, MT. This is the granddaughter of Caroline that Louisa speaks of below. Karen and Ronald both attended Montana State College.
From those letters 2-1 Uncle Austin must have had a daughter called Dolly -this gets confusing.
Grandma’s (Louisa Paddock) family: 2-1 Uncle Austin (L.A.); 2-2 Uncle Gerry (E. G.); 2-4 Aunt Helen; (?) Aunt Marion; 2-5 Louisa Maria (Grandma)
2-1 (Lauren) Austin (ask L.A.) Paddock m(1): Olive Barrett (she died 1869, age 29). Note: (Austin) Born 1837 in Ohio; Died 1900 in Wadena, MN
3-1 Lorenzo Austin “Loray” Paddock 1862-1932
3-2 Minnie Paddock 1864-1958
3-3 John William Paddock 1866-1927
m(2) in 1870: Loretta “Rhetta” Norton
3-4 Dollie L Paddock 1871-1911
3-5 Lauren Austin Paddock 1874-1938
3-6 Helen M Paddock 1876-1910
3-7 Della G Paddock 1879-1940
3-8 Arthur G Paddock 1880-1880 *infant death
3-9 Elbridge Gerry Paddock 1881-1882 *infant death
3-10 Ethel “Effie” Paddock 1884-1966
3-11 Annabel Paddock 1886-1971
2-1 Uncle Austin seemed to have been married twice, first family:
Willie, born about 1866 (Aunt Rose says his condition was always THOUGHT TO BE because his mother and father were cousins???) And this ties in with our Aunt Doll’s first marriage to Herb O’Dell (I have Harley O’Dell) who was a cousin once or twice removed. So these Paddock’s mother must have been an O’Dell. (I mean Grandma Lynch’s parents).
Note: 3-3 (John) William Paddock: in the 1900 Census he is 34 and living at home; in the 1910 Census he is 44 and living in the Faribault “State Hospital”, he dies there in 1927, age 61.
From Find A Grave: Olive P Barrett. she married Lauren Austin Paddock, her first cousin and son of Thomas J Paddock and her mother’s sister, Laura Odell.
Lorenzo and Minnie must have been the other two children of this first marriage of Uncle Austin's.
3-2 Minnie married Amos Bucklin. Note: I have Amos Abner Buckland
3-1 Lorenzo m: Lowa Myrtle Laneuville
I think his second family, went like this:
3-4 Dolly born 1881 or 1882, married “hired man” Waldron in 1889. (I have Robert Waldron); 3-5 L.A. Jr.; 3-6 Helen born 1875; 3-7 Della; 3-9 Eldridge Gerry 12/81; 3-10 Ethel; 3-11 Annabelle 1886; an (???) Olive and 3-8 Garfield died but don’t know where they fit in. Note: I don’t have any record of an Olive as a child of (Lauren) Austin but his 1st wife’s name is Olive. Paddock, Cemetery from Find A Grave. I did a Find A Grave search for Paddock in Minnesota Cemeteries and found a Paddock, Unknown, died in 1895, in Wadena. “Unable to read name on stone as it severely weathered. “ALDO??? Stone is next to and in same plot as Lauren Austin Paddock in the Wadena Cemetery. Loretta would have been 49 years old.
Aunt Rose says this second wife Rhetta (Loretta Odell) was raised in Grandma Lynch’s parents home, and was quite a little younger than Uncle Austin. You will note that Uncle Austin mentions Grandma Lynch (Louisa) and Rhetta being “Tom Boys” together.
Note:: 2-5 Louisa (Paddock) born 1848; Loretta born 1846.
Louisa’s parents: 1-Thomas Lynch and Laura Odell (Lauren was born 1837, 9 yrs difference between 2-1 Lauren and Loretta).
Media: information from Compendium of History and Biographies of Northern Minnesota (covers both 2-1 Lauren A and Loretta separately) Loretta “Rhetta”, her mother died when she was an infant and she went to live with an uncle (1- Dennis Lynch) who brought her west to Wisconsin when she was but five years old. She lived at Racine for about a year and then went to LaFayette, Wisconsin, where she lived for four years, then moved to Neshannok, Wisconsin, lived until 1864 when set went to Winnebago City and resided there with friends until her marriage to 2-1 Lauren A. Paddock in 1870.
2-2 (Elbridge) Gerry (E.G.) Paddock 1839-1920
m(1) Martha Barrett 1838-1873
3-1 William Paddock 1858-1937 m: Annie aka Anna M 1857-1930
4-1 (Thomas) Stanley Paddock 1889-1926
4-2 Merritt E Paddock 1891-1974 m: Rose C Loritz 1902-1995
5- *9 children
m(2) Katie Mitchell 1868-1945
3-2 Wallace Gerry Paddock 1879-1879 m: Dorothy P Hathaway 1893-1979
4-1 William G Paddock 1923
3-3 Ellen Paddock 1885
According to letter enclosed 2-2 Uncle Gerry was in N.D. in 1889 -but according to Grandma Lynch’s (Obituary) survivors he was in Campbell, Calif. in 1911.
Note: Born 1839 in Ohio; Died in 1920, Campbell, CA
There seems to be mention of a son Wallace born about 1881, but seems he had more than one son.
Note: 3-2 Wallace is the son of his 2nd wife Katie b: 1879
Don’t know a thing about Aunt Marion -in 1889 she was in Oregon, and Aunt Rose says she was in Alaska, at one time and very much like “our Aunt Doll”.
Note: Aunt Marion ?? I don’t have a Marion. The 1850 Census lists all the children I have: 2-1 Austin, 2-2 George, 2-3 Myron, 2-4 Hellen, 2-5 Louisa. 2-3 Myron doesn’t show up after 1850.
2-3 Myron Paddock 1841 no spouse or children. He is born in 1841 in Ohio; he is listed in the 1850, age 9, in Wisconsin. He’s not listed after that; in 1860 he would have been 19; 1870 29; 1880 39; 1900 49; 1910 59; 1920 69… Ancestry Hints: I followed tried applying the hints, they were conflicting so I did not use them.
2-4 Aunt Helen had: Arthur and Helen McNanny; Thomas Crowthers; Moses -youngest of her children, not sure McNanny, Crowthers or Tarble.
2-4 Helen Mar (1st) Paddock 1843-1921
m(1): James Carrothers 1830 (they divorced)
3-1 Althea Carrothers 1859-1938 m: Moses Salsbury 1852
4-1 Julia Margaret Salisbury 1878
3-2 Thomas Carrothers 1863
m(2): Dennis McNanney 1842-1887 (died young, age 45)

3-4 Helen Mar (2nd) McNanney 1874-1912 m: William Henry Riddle 1866-1942

m(3) Lemon H Tarbel 1837-1918
I think these letters (from 2-1 Lauren Austin Paddock) are priceless, and am sure since you are still in Minnesota that the comments will be of special interest. Remember there are many more of them, and I only picked out what I thought carried the most information, and some of what I may have above was in other letters.
You know since I got on this binge -I come up with the name Isabelle Morrow, whom I have known for years, and who claimed shirt-tail relationship. So I just called her, and this 3-2 Minnie and Amos Bucklin are her grandparents.
Note: 3-2 Minnie, daughter of 2-1 Lauren Austin Paddock and Olive P. Barrett, m: Amos Abner Buckland.
She was all for coming and reading the letters, but I warded that off since, 2-1 Uncle Austin was quite disturbed about 3-2 Minnie marrying the hired man.
Did tell her however that we would go over some of the letters later. She says that when Uncle Austin died that the whole front page of (I suppose the Wadena paper) the paper had history of his life, that she remembers her grandmother (Minnie) having it when she was about nine years old, and that it was an old paper then. Isabelle was born in 1910. She has no idea what became of that paper, but we both feel that there might be a copy of it still in the newspaper office in Wadena. Note: I found an Obituary for Lauren Austin Paddock on his Find A Grave Memorial Page: Wadena Pioneer Journal, 2/12/1900; BUSY LIFE ENDED. L A Paddock died suddenly Monday January 8, 1900. I also found a biographical sketch of him in a Compendium of History and Biographies of Northern Minnesota. I used these as resources to fill in his Ancestry Profile Page. See, Media: information from Compendium of History and Biographies of Northern Minnesota and Obituary for Lauren Austin Paddock from Find A Grave.
Here is a summary: he (Lauren Austin Paddock) did have an interesting life: after his 1st marriage (1856); in 1858 he caught “Gold Rush” fever and went to (Pikes Peak, Colorado -in 1858 it was in western Kansas Territory) traveling with mules and wagons; he fought in the Civil War, 1861-1865 (4 yrs, 2 mos); ran a hotel in Mpls after his (2nd) marriage 1870-71; lumbering in Brainerd, MN 1872-74; 1st pioneer settlers, Wadena Co, MN. 1874: Black Hills Gold Rush, South Dakota. 1875, Brainerd, MN. 1880, Town named after him: Paddock, Otter Tail Co (extensively involved in the lumbering business; built a mill which later burned down (source: Obituary). Bemidji lumber business, traded for property. Builds ‘Grand House” (over $1,000) in Wadena Co, MN. 1888, Political affiliation, Populist, representing “ordinary” people -occupied prominent place in the state govt. 1893, Grain Business in Duluth, MN. 1894, head of a lumber company in Georgia.
One might get something more on Paddocks thru that. She says her Aunt says we can trace back to Queen somebody of England -ha, ha, ha! Really not making light of it -just thinking about DAR prospects for conversational reasons.
...Remember me to all the family, and I would like to hear from you again soon -if you write Aunt Rose she lets me read the letters.
Always your cousin, Louisa
Note: I have traced the Paddock’s back to the Plymouth Colonies
Robert Paddock m: Mary Holmes. He was immigrated from Dublin Ireland to the Plymouth Colonies. Their son, Zachariah m: Deborah Sears moved from Plymouth, MA to Yarmouth, Barnstable, MA. Their son, Zachariah II m: Berthia Hall lived in Yarmouth, Barnstable, MA. Their son, Deacon David m: Mary Foster moved from Yarmouth, MA to New York. Their son, Marshall m: Tamzun Raymond moved from New York to Vermont. Their son, Foster Marshal Jr m: Chloe Raymond moved from Vermont to New York. Their son, 1-Thomas J Paddock m: Laura Odell moved from Vermont to Ohio (around 1837) to Wisconsin (around 1843) to Minnesota (around 1860); first residing in Mankato Twp, Blue Earth Co. ending up (around 1865) in Ripley and Westfield Twp, Dodge Co, MN (1865 Minnesota, Territorial and State Census); the 1870 Census lists them in Ripley Twp, Dodge Co, MN. Laura died there in 1873; Thomas in 1874. The Paddock-Lynch connection begins there when 2-1 Louisa Marie Paddock-Lynch married 2-1 Timothy Lynch in 1865. Their daughter, 3-6 Clare Maud Lynch, married George Alvey Gray in 1899. Their son, 4-1 Robert Lyn Gray (Lynch Branch), is my grandfather in a story he wrote about his grandmother, 2-1 Louisa Marie Paddock-Lynch, he states she lived a mile from his home (Riverview Farm). See, Gray-Piper Blog Post: The Paddock-Foster Lineage to William Brewster Mayflower. Mary Foster m: Deacon David Paddock was a 6th Generation Descendant of the Mayflower.
