Background: Before he died in 1971, my grandfather, Robert Lyn Gray, was working on the Gray, Lynch, Paddock family tree. It appears that these letters were the result of Robert writing to his Aunt Rosabel Lynch-Hicks requesting information. Aunt Rosabel’s letter is dated 12/27/1958; cousin Louisa’s letter is dated 9/7/1966. I attached a copy of the letters to the appropriate people in my Ancestry.com Gray-Piper Family Tree: Robert Lyn Gray, Rosabel Lynch, Louisa Crail. Media: Letter from Rosabel Lynch (m: Hicks). When Willie left us the baby was 6 months old… as she grew up I wrote to her. Each Christmas she writes to me. I’m sending you her letter. Note: I don’t know which ‘baby’ (she) Rosabel is referring to ???
She has told me about the others. Bell came out of the army a 1st Lieutenant; and is married; lives in Missouri. Unfortunately they couldn’t have children so they adopted a baby boy a couple years ago. Note: this comment: He has made good. I think is referring to “Bell” and I haven’t figured out who that is??? Possibility: refers to surname, not, given name; e.g. Archie Bell ???

(husband) is in the bulk plant business. That is Wayne’s business and is good. Note: Wayne, Rosabel’s son, same type business, not location.
1st Generation Lynch: Dennis and Ellen (Colhand) Lynch
About my grandparents. When they left Ireland in 1837, they had a boy and a baby girl. The boy was ill -so they left him with a priest who promised to bring him over later. The baby died on the boat and was buried at sea.
Note: at this time (2015) there are no Lynch Family records from Ireland… nothing to substantiate these children…
Three months after landing father [Timothy] was born in Montgomery Co., N.Y. When father was nine he was instrumental in bringing them to Janesville, Wis., and when 19, he brought them to Minn. I never saw grandfather (Dennis Lynch), and was only 8 when grandmother (Ellen Colhand-Lynch) died. Grandfather died suddenly with a stroke. None of my Grands reached 65…
Louisa and her dad (William H Crail) came yesterday. They are fine. The daughter moved into a swell new home. Note: Louisa (Crail) Miller (see the box below) also wrote a letter to Robert Lyn Gray; parts of her letter are included.
4-3 Louisa M (Crail) Miller, daughter of Lillie Mamie Lynch m: William Henry Crail.
3-4 Lillie Mamie Lynch, daughter of (1st Generation Lynch) Dennis and Ellen (Colhand) Lynch
A year ago Hester was in the hospital at Christmas. Had lumps removed from her breast. I had a card from her saying she was making up for it this year. Her mother was there. She is a smart one, for one 80 years old. Elizabeth (Parrett) Lynch Note: she was 80 in 1958 when Rosabel wrote the letter.
Art’s family is one to be proud of.
(Art’s family): 3-8 Arthur Timothy Lynch m: Elizabeth Irene Parrett
Arthur Timothy Lynch, son of Timothy and Louisa M (Paddock) Lynch
Note: Arthur moved to Canada (Arrival: 1910) he remained there, raised his family there, died there in 1952; his wife Elizabeth died there in 1966. The only one of his children who left Canada was Norma.
Children of Arthur and Elizabeth Lynch: 4-1 Hester Lorraine; 4-2 Donovan (Don) Arthur; 4-3 Norma Lisle; 4-4 Alan Edward.
4-1 Hester m: Charles Herbert Schulver
4-2 Donovan m: Marion Ada March
4-3 Norma m: Harold Verne Bostock
4-4 Alan m: Margaret Elsie Patterson
Norma is going to the Chicago W (World’s Fair maybe???) She is a worker and a lecturer. She seems to crave more knowledge.
Letter from 4-3 Louisa M (Crail) Miller. 9/7/1966
Just recently we had a letter from 4-1 Hester Lynch Schulver, Woodrow, Sask., Canada telling us about the death of her mother, Sept 21, I believe. (Note: her mother, Elizabeth (Parrett) Lynch did die in 1966) She said all four of them were there (Norma, Don, Alan and Hester). Hester has done lots of traveling in the interest of her Eastern Star work, and possibly some other civic program as I really haven’t followed it too much, but seems like I hear about her being on a trip -and for a good reason. The few times that I have seen her and her husband Charles, also girls, that they are an exceptionally nice family.
Note: Hester traveled to England in 1959: *Hester L Shulver, B: 12/19/1911 (Source: Passenger List, 1959; Departure, Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Arrival, Liverpool, England (age 47)
(letter continued) 4-2 Caroline is the daughter of 3-2 Nellie (Laura) Lynch and William H Chase. Caroline m: Verne Ludwick; their daughter 5-1 Nellie Mae Ludwick m: Stephen Granat; their daughter 6-2 Karen Granat m: Ronald Glazier (8/28/1966) in Malta, MT. This is the granddaughter of Caroline that Louisa speaks of below. Karen and Ronald both attended Montana State College.
When Caroline and I took our Canadian tour we had hoped to visit them (Hester (Lynch) and Charles Schulver Family), but they were “on a trip”, and Aunt Elizabeth (Parrett-Lynch, mother of Hester) who lived in Moose Jaw was also on the same trip -so we missed out on that visit.
I went to Malta a week ago for Caroline’s grand daughter’s wedding, and while I was there we spent a most interesting time going thur some old letters that Uncle Austin (Grandmother Louisa Paddock-Lynch’s brother) had written to Aunt Nell (Lynch-Chase) between 1893-1890.
Note: I have added the information about Uncle Austin and his letters after the finish of Rosabela’s letter.
Letter from Rosabel (Lynch) Hicks, 12/27/1958; continued
I must send Wayne a birthday card. He’ll be 50 Tues. They were over Christmas. Brought their dinner over. Kathryn goes to State College in Bozeman. She is so happy and enjoys it a lot.
Carole is 16 a Jr in High (school). She looks like me. Nancy is 12, a great lover of animal nature.
I get around on wheels. Wayne fixed a chair with large costars. I slide from it unto everything and get along fine. Since Oct 10th I’ve had to look after myself. I enjoy it. Margaret is still just up and down.
3-5 Rosabel Lynch m: Walter Simonton Hicks
4-1 Wayne Deniston Hicks m: Laura A Six
5-1 Kathryn m: James A Biegel
they had 2 children: 6-1 Kristi and 6-2 Shawna
Kathryn goes to State College in Bozeman. She is so happy and enjoys it a lot. Note: I found her in Montana State college: 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962
5-2 Carole m: Paul A Phass

Carole is 16 a Jr in High (school).

4-2 Timothy Justin HIcks (died in 1969, age 57) no children
m(1): Mary Houben m(2): Grace Alvira Sannes
I get nice letters from Archie Bell -the West sisters. Lowry died last Aug. May be his name is Larry. He lived in Orr (?) Note: I do not know who she is referring “the West sisters” And I don’t know who Lowry (Larry) is? The only Larry I find is Lawrence (Larry) Weigum m: Eilene Mae Lynch of San Antonio, TX
2-2 Mary Ann Lynch 11843-1920 m: William Bell 1834-1922 (Scotland)
Children of Mary Ann Lynch and William Bell
3-1 John H Bell 1859-1945 m: Julia Hallaway 1867-1926
4-3 Archibald “Archie” Carl Bell 1889-1979 m: Mabel M Helm 1891-1967
Note: Archie and Mabel had 3 daughters, Eileen died young (17). Appears he lived in Dodge Co, all his life except for the 1930 Census has him in Huron, S.D. (renting, selling insurance).
Dad (Timothy Lynch b: 1838) and Johnie Bell (b: 1859) moved the bodies of the father (Dennis Lynch, died 1874) and 4 girls from Ashland Cemetery to Dodge Cemetery.
Note: 4 girls: I find the following 3 that died in 1880’s; I’m missing one.
(daughters of Dennis and Ellen Lynch) Ellen died 1862, age 19; Catherine died 1864, age 18
(daughter of Timothy and Louisa Lynch) Pearl died 1888, age 2
Speaking of history, Jesse made lots of mistakes. It tells of Grandpa and Dennis Jr going for corn meal, I’m sure it was dad. Uncle Dennis was only 9 yrs older than Johnie Bell. I think Dennis was running the elevator when it burned, not Griffin.
Note: I don’t know who Jesse is… evidently he/she wrote some family history…
??? The only Jesse I found (in the Gray branch) is the daughter of Carolyn Crail and John Slack; she married Jeff McFarland.
P.S. I wrote the Hix history -7 generations and was going to write the Lynch biography but my hands failed me. I can’t type now. Our correct name is Hix.
