Euphemia Cockburn b. 1819, Berwick, Scotland

(Jody Gray) I created this Blog Post as a place to keep information relating to the name Euphemia, the ‘given name’ of 3rd great-grandmother Euphemia Cockburn, for research purposes. I’ve been researching her father, Robert Cockburn, who immigrated from Scotland and settled in Dearborn, Michigan. The Cockburn’s were a prominent family in Scotland, loyal to the Scottish throne. In modern times, Euphemia is an unusual name, but it was fairly common in Scotland in the period Euphemia Cockburn was born and lived in. Many of her female descendants appear to have been named in her memory.
I’m curious who Euphemia was named after. The Gray Family Tree contains Euphemia de Crosebi wife of 26th great-uncle Robert II de Brus, 2nd Lord of Annandale (see, entry below) -their son, William de Brus is the progenitor of the lineage to Robert I the Bruce, King of Scots. Robert II, King of Scots (grandson of Robert I) married Euphemia de Ross -she was Queen of Scots 1371-1386. I have added 5th cousin 22x removed Robert I the Bruce, King of Scots to The Gray Family Tree but so far have not added all his children (descendants).

Euphemia married Alexander in Wait 1/3/1838 Chirnside, Berwick, Scotland.
Died before 1871, Ontario, Canada -based on the fact that she is not listed as an heir on her father, Robert Cockburn’s probate record.
No Death Records found. (Jody Gray) it appears both Euphemia Cockburn and Alexander Wait settled in and remained in Canada to their death.

Media: Wait, John; Biographical Sketch. John Wait, son of Alexander and Euphenna (Colburn) Wait, natives of Scotland. They emigrated to Canada at an early day and settled in county Kent. The father was a ship carpenter by trade and died in 1871 -(they were) parents of two children (this John) and Anna, who is now Mrs. George Gray, of Dodge Co., MN.
Note: both John and Anne moved to Minnesota, married, and, died there.

Media: Wait, Anne R Notes: Euphemia, early martyr from Chalcedon. Diminutives: Effie, Eppie, Femie, Phemie (English). Ancient martyr’s name that, though not especially appealing might still be mildly possible, especially for Anglophiles [a person who is fond of or greatly admires England or Britain]. It was widely used in early Scotland, bt was overtaken by its nickname, Effie.
Euphenna doesn’t come up as a common names… all the people that do come up are from Scotland. Google asks, Did you mean: Euphemia or Eugenia.
